Pathology & Functional Testing

Taking the Guesswork Out of Your Health

When you’re dealing with persistent fatigue, hormonal fluctuations, digestive discomfort, or simply feeling like your health is out of balance, finding clear answers can feel overwhelming.

While symptoms give us valuable clues about what your body is experiencing, specialised testing allows us to peer under the hood. By combining clinical history with targeted functional and routine pathology testing, we remove the guesswork and build a clear, actionable picture of what your body truly needs to thrive.

How We Approach Testing: A Collaborative, Flexible Model

We believe testing should be practical, accessible, and tailored entirely to your needs and budget. We offer a few flexible pathways to ensure you get the exact insights required for your health journey:

1. Working Alongside Your GP

We deeply value collaborative care. Where appropriate, we are always happy to write a suggested list of routine blood tests for you to take to your local General Practitioner. If your GP agrees to request these on your behalf, many standard markers can be covered under Medicare. We can then review, interpret, and track these results alongside your unique symptoms and complete health picture.

2. Direct Private Pathology Requests (QML)

If you prefer to bypass GP appointment wait times or wish to investigate specific wellness markers not typically covered by Medicare, we can issue private pathology request forms directly through clinical labs like QML Pathology. You can take your request form straight to any QML collection center, with results sent directly to our clinic for analysis.

3. Advanced Functional Health Testing (Nutripath & Specialised Labs)

Standard blood tests are wonderful for checking overall organ function and major imbalances, but sometimes we need to dig deeper into biochemical pathways, microbial balance, or hormonal rhythms. We partner with leading functional pathology providers—such as Nutripath—to offer advanced functional test kits that can often be completed comfortably from home via simple sample collection (stool, saliva, urine, or hair).

Key Functional & Advanced Tests We Offer

Every body is unique, and we only ever recommend testing that is clinically relevant to your specific story. Some of the core investigations we utilise include:

Complete Microbiome & Gut Analysis

Your gut is the bedrock of your overall health—influencing everything from digestion and immunity to mood and skin health. Advanced stool analysis goes far beyond standard tests, looking at the complex ecosystem of your gut microbiome, beneficial species, potential overgrown bacteria, yeast, parasites, and markers of digestive capacity and inflammation.

DUTCH Hormone Testing (Dried Urine Test for Comprehensive Hormones)

Hormone levels fluctuate significantly throughout the day. The DUTCH test offers one of the most comprehensive looks available at your sex and adrenal hormones. Rather than just taking a snapshot in time, it evaluates hormone production, cortisol patterns, and—crucially—how your body metabolizes and breaks down these hormones (such as estrogen pathways).

Organic Acids Test (OAT)

Think of the OAT as a metabolic snapshot of your cellular health. Using a single urine sample, this test measures organic acids to evaluate cellular energy production, mitochondrial function, neurotransmitter metabolites, key vitamin deficiencies, detoxification capability, and intestinal microbial overgrowth.

Salivary Cortisol & Stress Profiles

If you are experiencing burnout, sleep disturbances, or chronic exhaustion, evaluating your diurnal cortisol rhythm via saliva testing helps us map your body's stress response throughout the day. This reveals whether your adrenals are working overtime or struggling to keep up with life’s demands.

Methylation & Gene Expression Testing

Understanding Your Body’s Biochemical Switches

Methylation is a fundamental biochemical process happening millions of times every second in every cell of your body. Think of methylation like a series of tiny molecular switches that turn genes on or off, produce brain chemicals (like serotonin and dopamine), process hormones, clear out toxins, and regulate your cellular energy.

When your methylation pathways are sluggish or working in overdrive, it can impact everything from your mood, sleep, and histamine tolerance to your fertility, cardiovascular health, and overall vitality.

What We Test For:

  • MTHFR & Functional Methylation Panels: Evaluating key genetic variations (such as MTHFR, MTR, MTRR, and COMT) alongside active biochemical markers.

  • Homocysteine & B-Vitamin Status: Checking baseline plasma homocysteine and active B-vitamin pathways (serum Folate, Active B12, and B6) to see how efficiently your cycle is turning over in real time.

  • Comprehensive Amino Acid & Detoxification Profiles: Assessing how well your liver and cells are processing intermediate metabolites.

A Grounded, Reassuring Approach

It is very easy to feel overwhelmed or anxious when reading about gene variations like MTHFR online. We view genetic and methylation testing not as a "diagnosis of something being broken," but simply as a road map of your unique biochemical tendencies.

Identifying your specific methylation patterns allows us to offer targeted, active nutrients (such as activated folate and B12), gentle dietary tweaks, and sensible lifestyle adjustments—ensuring your body has the exact support it needs to function smoothly.

DNA & Gene Polymorphism Testing (Nutrigenomics)

Understanding Your Body's Unique Genetic Blueprint

Your DNA is like the unique deck of cards you were dealt at birth. While you cannot change your underlying genetic code, modern scientific research shows that your diet, environment, and lifestyle choices exert a powerful influence over how your genes express themselves. This fascinating field is known as nutrigenomics—the study of how nutrients interact with your individual gene variations (Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms, or SNPs).

Rather than diagnosing disease risk or making you feel defined by a label, functional genomic testing empowers us with a clear roadmap of your cellular strengths and vulnerabilities. It helps us answer why certain health tendencies run in your family, why you might process certain foods or environmental toxins differently, or why your body requires higher baseline amounts of specific vitamins and minerals.

What a Comprehensive DNA Panel Explores:

Using a quick, non-invasive cheek swab completed in the comfort of your own home, we can partner with specialized functional laboratories (such as Nutripath) to analyse key functional gene pathways:

  • Macronutrient & Metabolic Health: How efficiently your body processes fats, proteins, and carbohydrates, helping us tailor dietary patterns that support sustainable energy and weight management.

  • Detoxification & Toxin Sensitivity: How effectively your liver Phase I and Phase II pathways clear internal metabolic byproducts, heavy metals, synthetic chemicals, and environmental pollutants.

  • Hormone & Neurotransmitter Pathways: Insights into how your brain and endocrine system produce, use, and break down estrogen, progesterone, thyroid hormones, dopamine, and serotonin.

  • Inflammation & Cellular Repair: Evaluating your body’s baseline inflammatory drivers, antioxidant production (such as glutathione pathways), and DNA protection mechanisms.

  • Nutrient Requirements: Revealing genetic variations that impact how effectively you absorb and convert key nutrients—such as active B vitamins, Vitamin D, zinc, and omega fatty acids.

An Empowering, Epigenetic Perspective

A genetic variant is never a sentence—it is simply a biological clue. Knowing where your pathways might be running a little sluggish allows us to "work around" those genetic bottlenecks using targeted food choices, specific nutrient cofactors, and gentle lifestyle adjustments.

We walk through your report together step by step, translating complex biochemistry into simple, practical, and everyday steps that fit seamlessly into your life.

Comprehensive Nutrient Status

We look closely at essential vitamin and mineral levels—including full iron studies, Vitamin D, Vitamin B12 and folate pathways, zinc, copper, active fatty acids, and key electrolytes—ensuring your cells have the fundamental building blocks they need for daily vitality.

Heavy Metal & Mineral Analysis

Chronic exposure to environmental toxins, heavy metals (such as lead, mercury, or aluminum), or imbalances in essential minerals can subtly impact cellular function, energy, and cognitive clarity over time. Mineral and toxic element testing helps us safely support your body’s natural clearance and restoration pathways.

Pathology Interpretation: Looking Beyond "Normal"

Have you ever been told your lab results came back completely "normal," yet you still feel far from well?

Standard pathology reference ranges are designed to detect active disease processes. Functional health interpretation, however, looks at optimal ranges—the narrow window where your biochemical systems operate at their best.

We take the time to sit down with your results, translate the complex biochemistry into everyday language, and tie every marker back to how you actually feel in daily life. From there, we design a warm, practical, and achievable plan to restore balance.
